Social Justice Movie Assignment
Good movies can teach us a great deal about topics that are new to us. Here is your opportunity to see some movies that will help you learn and think about social justice.
This assignment is due in the last week of classes.
Choose some of the following films. They are all available either at the Greater Victoria Public Library (VPL) or in the Stelly’s Library or online. Watch each film and write a 250-1000 word evaluation covering the following information:
- Plot outline (no more than three sentences – this is the least important aspect of your evaluation)
- How is privilege or lack of privilege demonstrated in this film?
- Judge this film or the story within the film using the Social Justice Lens. Use the checklist below to consider the social justice aspects of the film but do not just list the checklist in your evaluation – you must write your evaluation in complete sentences.
These evaluations are to be posted on your blog.
You will choose one film and present it to the class. Your presentation should be no more than 5 minutes plus a short clip from the film. The presentations will be given in the last week of class. Each student must present a different film.
Marking Rubric:
Evaluation of two films – maximum grade is P
Evaluation of three films – maximum grade is C
Evaluation of four films – maximum grade is C+
Evaluation of five films – maximum grade is B
Evaluation of six films – maximum grade is A
Privilege:
- Identification of one aspect of privilege – P
- Identification of one aspect of privilege and one aspect of lack of privilege – C
- Description and identification of privilege and lack of privilege – C+
- In depth description of privilege and lack of privilege – B
- In depth description of privilege and lack of privilege and how you would address the situation if you had the opportunity – A
Using the Social Justice Lens:
- Identification of one aspect of Access, Agency, Advocacy, and Solidarity Action – P
- Identification of at least two aspects of Access, Agency, Advocacy, and Solidarity Action – C
- Identification of all relevant aspects of Access, Agency, Advocacy, and Solidarity Action – C+
- Basic description of these aspects within the film or the film story – B
- In depth description of all relevant aspects within the film or the film story – A
